Historical Background

The Class 86 was developed by the newly formed German State Railways during the late 1920s as a powerful and versatile standard locomotive for branch line and secondary route operations. Designed to replace a wide variety of older regional locomotive types, the Class 86 combined strong hauling power with a relatively compact tank-engine design, making it suitable for both passenger and freight services.

Between 1928 and 1943, an impressive 774 locomotives were built, making the Class 86 one of Germany's most successful standard steam locomotive classes. Their ability to operate on both branch lines and main lines saw them hauling local passenger trains, freight services and even express workings across Germany. Following the Second World War, the class continued to serve with both the Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Reichsbahn, remaining a familiar sight well into the diesel era. Several examples survive in preservation today, cementing the Class 86's status as one of the most iconic German steam locomotives ever built.
