Whether used for heavy freight consists or as a standalone showcase piece, the 37983 delivers outstanding realism, smooth operation, and true collector-grade craftsmanship.
Historical Background
The prototype of the Märklin 37983 is the famous Southern Pacific “Berkshire” 2-8-4 steam locomotive, part of a revolutionary class of American freight engines developed in the mid-1920s.
The “Berkshire” design emerged as an evolution of the earlier “Mikado” locomotives, which were no longer powerful enough to meet the demands of rapidly expanding freight traffic in the United States. To solve this, engineers developed a new “super-power” steam locomotive featuring a larger firebox, improved boiler efficiency, and a revised wheel arrangement (2-8-4) that provided both stability and high tractive effort.
These locomotives were named after the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, where early prototypes were tested by the Boston & Albany Railroad. Their success led to widespread adoption, with more than 600 units built across multiple railroads.
A distinctive subgroup of these locomotives was the so-called “Coffin Berkshires,” named after their unusual feedwater heater design. Several of these engines later entered service with the Southern Pacific Railroad after World War II, where they received modified liveries and continued to haul heavy freight across the western United States.
