Historical Background
The Baden IV h was one of the finest express steam locomotive designs produced in Germany. Built by J. A. Maffei between 1918 and 1920, these powerful four-cylinder Pacific locomotives were designed for high-speed passenger services and became famous for hauling prestigious trains such as the Rheingold and Riviera-Naples Express. With approximately 2,000 horsepower and large driving wheels, they ranked among the fastest and most capable locomotives of their era.
Following the Second World War, only a handful survived. Thanks to the efforts of the German Federal Railroad Central Bureau, locomotives including No. 18 323 were rebuilt and used for testing, research work and special duties throughout West Germany. The locomotive became a star attraction on railtours during the 1960s and remained in service until 1969, earning a place among the most famous preserved examples of German steam locomotive engineering. Today, No. 18 323 remains a symbol of the golden age of European express steam and one of the most admired locomotives ever to run in Germany.
