Historical Background
During the 1920s, the Austrian Federal Railways (BBÖ) embarked on an ambitious programme to electrify the country's most important railway routes. To tackle the challenging mountain gradients of the Alpine network, a new generation of powerful electric express locomotives was developed, inspired by successful Swiss designs. The result was the remarkable Class 1100, later designated the Class 1189 under ÖBB ownership.
The locomotives featured an articulated design with two powered bogie units connected by a central machinery section housing the transformer and electrical equipment. Their long, low hoods quickly earned them the nickname "Crocodile", a name that remains synonymous with some of the most famous electric locomotives ever built.
With their impressive power and sure-footed performance on steep Alpine routes, the Class 1189 locomotives became a mainstay of Austrian express services for decades. Their distinctive appearance and pioneering engineering have since made them highly sought-after subjects for railway enthusiasts and model railway collectors alike.
