Details

The SBB Re 460 is a modern four-axle electric locomotive operated by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB/CFF/FFS) and a flagship of Switzerland’s Rail 2000 modernisation programme. Built between 1991 and 1996, a total of 119 locomotives were delivered to replace aging electrics and overhaul express passenger services on Switzerland’s highly electrified network.

Recognisable by its sleek, streamlined bodywork and distinctive Swiss red livery, the Re 460 features a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement with powerful traction motors and a lightweight design that supports both rapid acceleration and strong high-speed performance. It runs under 15 kV AC overhead electrification and is capable of 200 km/h operation, making it ideal for long-distance InterCity and InterRegio trains. These locomotives are frequently seen hauling double-deck IC 2000 trainsets, premium expresses and other key passenger services between major Swiss cities and border connections.

Initially able to handle freight duties, the Re 460 fleet later focused primarily on passenger operations as specialised freight electrics took over heavy goods work. Over the years the class has received system modernisations, including updated traction electronics and improved energy efficiency, ensuring continued service into the 21st century.
