Details

The Märklin 88295 showcases one of Bavaria's most impressive steam locomotive designs in finely detailed Z Gauge. Representing the famous Bavarian Gt 2x4/4 articulated freight locomotive in its striking circa-1913 photographic paint scheme, this exceptional model captures the appearance of one of the most powerful tank locomotives of its era. Featuring completely new tooling, a hand-cast bronze body and intricate running gear detail, this locomotive is a standout addition to any Epoch I collection.

Designed to haul heavy freight trains across the demanding gradients of the Bavarian railway network, the prototype's distinctive Mallet articulated design is faithfully reproduced. The model features articulated running gear for smooth curve negotiation, a precision bell-shaped armature motor and power collection to all driving wheels for reliable operation. Finely detailed valve gear, connecting rods, brake rigging and rail clearance devices further enhance the realism of this remarkable locomotive.

Directional warm white LED headlights add operational realism, while the exquisite bronze construction and finely applied paintwork make this a true collector's model. Produced as a one-time series, the Märklin 88295 is an ideal choice for enthusiasts of early German steam locomotives and premium Z Gauge models.

Historical Background

Introduced by the Royal Bavarian State Railways in the early twentieth century, the Gt 2x4/4 was developed to tackle the increasingly heavy freight trains operating over Bavaria's steeply graded routes. Designed as an articulated Mallet locomotive, it combined immense pulling power with the flexibility required to negotiate sharp curves and challenging mountain railways.

The locomotive utilised compound expansion technology, with separate high-pressure and low-pressure cylinders delivering impressive efficiency and tractive effort. At the time of its introduction, the class ranked amongst the most powerful tank locomotives in Europe and quickly proved its value on heavy mineral and freight services throughout Bavaria.

The success of the design ensured a long operational life, with many locomotives continuing to work under the Deutsche Reichsbahn long after the formation of the unified German railway system. Today, the Gt 2x4/4 is remembered as a landmark locomotive in German railway engineering and a fascinating example of early articulated steam locomotive development.
