Details
Bring authentic German regional passenger operations to your Z Gauge layout with the Märklin 88701 DB Class 628.2 and Class 928.2 diesel multiple unit set. Finished in the distinctive mint turquoise and light grey livery of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, this highly detailed 1:220 scale model recreates one of Germany's most recognisable regional trains of the late 1980s and 1990s.
The set comprises a powered Class 628.2 driving vehicle permanently coupled to a Class 928.2 driving trailer, accurately reflecting the prototype configuration. A precision bell-armature motor powers both bogies on the railcar, delivering smooth, quiet running and impressive performance. Directional LED lighting features three warm-white headlights and twin red tail lamps, while the model also benefits from a built-in buffer capacitor for reliable operation across points and complex trackwork.
Märklin has paid close attention to detail throughout, with finely applied livery and lettering, detailed cab interiors, passenger compartment representation and illuminated interior lighting. Combined with the substantial weight of the model, the result is a highly realistic diesel multiple unit that looks as impressive in operation as it does on display.
Perfect for Epoch IV German layouts, branch lines and regional passenger services, the Märklin 88701 is an essential addition for enthusiasts of modern German railway operations.

Historical Background
During the 1970s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn faced increasing competition from private car ownership, while many rural passenger services continued to rely on ageing Class 795 and 798 railbuses. To modernise regional transport and improve passenger comfort, DB developed the new Class 628 diesel multiple unit family.
Following evaluation of the initial Class 628.0 prototypes, the improved Class 628.2 entered service during the mid-1980s. The design paired a powered driving vehicle with a non-powered Class 928 driving trailer, providing greater flexibility and lower operating costs than traditional locomotive-hauled trains. Spacious interiors, improved ride quality and modern passenger facilities quickly made the class a familiar sight across Germany.
The Class 628 became one of the most successful regional diesel multiple units in German railway history, operating on branch lines and secondary routes throughout the country for decades. Their distinctive mint green and light grey livery became synonymous with Deutsche Bundesbahn regional services during the final years before railway reunification, making the Class 628 a favourite subject for modern-era railway enthusiasts and Z Gauge modellers alike.
