Details

The Prussian G 8 was a class of eight-coupled steam freight locomotives operated by the Prussian state railways in the early 20th century. Built between 1902 and 1913, a total of 1,054 locomotives were produced by major German builders including AG Vulcan Stettin, Hanomag, Henschel and others. It was one of the first superheated goods locomotives in Prussia, representing a significant advance in steam traction for heavy freight service.

Designed with a 0-8-0 wheel arrangement, the G 8 combined strong traction with robust steam production, making it well suited to arduous goods work at moderate speeds of around 55 km/h. Early examples experienced typical teething troubles related to new superheater technology and the weight limits imposed by infrastructure, but continuous improvements such as larger cylinders and expanded heating surfaces helped refine the class throughout its production life.

After the First World War many locomotives were handed over as reparations to foreign railways, while the remainder were taken into service by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as DRG Class 55.16 to 22. These engines continued in freight use well into the mid-20th century, with some examples surviving in various European fleets long after steam began to give way to diesel and electric traction.
