Details

The DRB Class 41 was a highly successful German steam locomotive developed in the late 1930s for the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB) to handle both heavy freight and mixed-traffic duties. Designed as part of the wartime standardisation programme, the Class 41 featured a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement (two leading wheels, four coupled driving axles and two trailing wheels) that delivered excellent traction for freight while still allowing brisk running with passenger and express services where required.

Between 1939 and 1943, a significant number of Class 41 locomotives were built, making it one of the most numerous standard classes introduced during that period. The strong frames, sizeable boilers and dependable valve gear made the Class 41 suitable for a broad range of duties, from heavy goods trains on main routes to fast freight and occasional passenger workings on secondary lines.

After the Second World War, surviving Class 41s were divided between the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) in West Germany and the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in East Germany. Both administrations continued to use them through the post-war years, often modernising boilers or updating equipment to extend service life. In West Germany many were rebuilt in the 1950s with new high-performance boilers, while others continued in everyday freight use into the 1960s and 1970s until diesel and electric traction gradually took over.
