Brief Class 56 History

The Class 56 fleet was introduced between 1976 and 1984, a total of 135 examples were manufactured. The first 30 locomotives (56001 - 56030, factory classification LDE3500) were built by Electroputere in Romania, but these typically suffered from poor construction standards and many were withdrawn from service early for extensive rebuilding before re-entering revenue service. The remaining 105 locomotives were built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at Doncaster Works (56031 to 56115) and Crewe Works (56116 to 56135).

Our Model

Produced as a special Gaugemaster Limited Edition, this highly detailed N gauge locomotive combines exceptional scale fidelity with outstanding running performance. Featuring a finely reproduced body with etched grilles, separately fitted handrails and a host of factory-applied details, it captures the appearance of the prototype with remarkable accuracy.

Beneath the detailed exterior, a precision-engineered split-frame tungsten chassis provides excellent weight distribution and smooth running characteristics. The powerful 5-pole motor, combined with all-wheel drive and all-wheel electrical pick-up, ensures reliable performance across a wide range of layouts and operating conditions.

The model is supplied with etched brass nameplates and number plates for enhanced realism, while directional lighting adds further operational authenticity. Darkened wheels and pinpoint bearings contribute to both appearance and performance, making this locomotive equally suited to collectors and operators.

A comprehensive spares pack is included, containing additional detailing parts, along with both standard NEM couplings and knuckle couplings, allowing the model to be customised to suit individual preferences and layout requirements.
