For the latest announcement from KATO USA, one of the most recognisable streamliners in American rail history takes centre stage with a newly produced model of the legendary Pioneer Zephyr.
Originally built for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1934, the Pioneer Zephyr represented a bold step forward during a challenging era for the rail industry. As passenger numbers declined amid the Great Depression and the rise of the motor car, the CB&Q partnered with the Budd Company to create a sleek, diesel-powered “train of the future” designed to capture public imagination.
Its place in history was secured on 26 May 1934, when it completed a record-breaking non-stop run between Denver and Chicago, covering over 1,000 miles in just over 13 hours, far surpassing the typical two-day journey of the time. Today, the train survives as a preserved exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, and KATO’s latest release faithfully reflects its current appearance, offering modellers the opportunity to recreate this groundbreaking icon of streamlined rail travel.
