New From the Gaugemaster Collection: Dapol Toplight Coach Packs
We are pleased to announce, as part of the Gaugemaster Collection, new Dapol Toplight Coach Packs. Offered as sets of three matching coaches, these packs allow quick and easy population of your carriage siding and rakes. There are two of each style of pack, enabling you to easily create prototypical lengths of trains with unique coaches.
These will be in stock soon and are available to order now with a big saving compared to buying three individual coaches. These packs are of limited supply; once they are gone, they are gone.
The first order for Toplight coaches was placed in 1915, but due to the First World War, they were not built until 1920, with the second batch being completed in 1921. Six sets of coaches were produced, with each set comprising six coaches. The coaches were close-coupled and constructed with a steel body rather than the traditional wooden panelling.
Due to the restrictive loading gauge of the London Underground tunnels, the carriages are 7 inches lower than other contemporary carriages of the time. This enabled them to travel directly to Aldgate and Liverpool Street on the Metropolitan Underground system. The coaches were originally used for commuter traffic from the likes of Reading and Windsor into the City of London. At the start of the Second World War this service was curtailed. However, after the war and into BR days the coaches could be found on services much further afield.
