Piko Announce a Surprise New Item: A BR03 DR Steam Locomotive

Rebuilt to Last – Introducing the DR BR 03 2128-1 Steam Locomotive

A true classic of East German engineering returns to the rails in model form! From 1969 onward, the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s BR 03 steam locomotives underwent an extensive reconstruction to extend their service life. These upgrades included the installation of a fully welded Type 39E boiler—the same type used on BR 22 and BR 41 locomotives—alongside a redesigned pump arrangement, a distinctive feedwater heater mounted on the smokebox, and a new cab roof.

This stunning model reproduces 03 2128-1, based in Leipzig and last overhauled in March 1975, with exceptional fidelity. Packed with fine details and modern digital features—including directional lighting, flickering firebox, driver’s cab illumination, and a factory-fitted smoke generator—this is a must-have for Era IV enthusiasts. Digital sound versions come preloaded with locomotive-specific effects and are compatible with the PSD XP Sound Decoder #56620. Complete with all the necessary detail parts for static display, this is one steam legend that looks just as good in motion as it does on show.
