DB BR144 188-0 Electric Locomotive

The E 44 series was the first German electric locomotive class to exceed 100 units, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of electric traction. As the first large mainline electric locomotive to eliminate leading and trailing axles in favour of proven axle-hung motor drives, it set new standards for performance and reliability. Designed as a true universal locomotive, the E 44 became a cornerstone of electric railway operations across southern and central Germany from the 1930s through to the 1980s.

In 1963, the rebuilt E 44 188 entered service. Based on the former Höllentalbahn locomotive E 244 11, this variant featured notable external differences from standard production models. These included two enlarged front windows, double-nozzle ventilation grilles, revised sliding windows, relocated access doors, an extended roof profile, and upgraded DBS 54 pantographs. The result was a distinctive and technically advanced development within the iconic E 44 family.
