Historical Background
The Alexander M Type was a distinctive British motorway coach body developed during the 1970s by Walter Alexander Coachbuilders at Falkirk, Scotland. Designed primarily for long-distance express services operated by the Scottish Bus Group, the M Type became closely associated with Anglo-Scottish coach routes linking major cities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London.
Introduced in the mid-1970s, the Alexander M Type was built on a variety of chassis including the Volvo B58, Leyland Leopard, and Seddon Pennine 7. The coach featured modern styling for its era, with large panoramic windows, roof skylights, comfortable seating, and integrated luggage space designed for extended motorway travel. Its sleek appearance and high passenger comfort standards helped it stand out among British coaches of the period.
The M Type quickly became a familiar sight on express coach services throughout Scotland and northern England, often finished in the striking blue and silver Scottish Bus Group livery or the black and white colours of Western Scottish. Many examples later moved into private ownership or secondary regional duties before retirement during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
