Historical Background

The Fowler Showman’s Engine was developed by John Fowler & Co. of Leeds, one of Britain’s leading steam engineering manufacturers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Showman’s engines were specially adapted steam traction engines designed to travel with fairgrounds and provide electrical power for rides, lighting and entertainment equipment. Unlike standard agricultural traction engines, they featured decorative canopies, dynamos for electricity generation and highly polished paintwork with ornate lining and brass detailing.

The Fowler B6 series became particularly well known among travelling showmen thanks to its reliability, power and impressive road presence. Engines such as “Onward” represented the colourful era of steam-powered travelling fairs that toured Britain before widespread electrification and diesel transport. These magnificent engines hauled caravans, rides and generators between towns while serving as both working machinery and centrepieces of the fairground itself. Today, surviving Fowler showman’s engines are highly prized by preservation societies and steam rally enthusiasts, making them enduring icons of Britain’s industrial and entertainment heritage.
