Historical Background
The Ford Transit Mk2 was introduced in 1977 as an upgraded version of the original Ford Transit, featuring a redesigned longer nose section to accommodate new engine options and improved safety standards. Production continued until 1985, during which time the Mk2 became one of Britain’s most successful light commercial vehicles thanks to its versatility, durability and wide range of body styles. The Transit was extensively used by utility companies, emergency services and government departments across the UK.
The Post Office Engineering Department was responsible for maintaining Britain’s telephone and communications infrastructure before the creation of British Telecom in 1981. Ford Transit vans became essential working vehicles for engineers installing and repairing telephone lines, exchange systems and communications equipment nationwide. Finished in highly visible utility liveries, these vans became familiar sights on British roads throughout the 1970s and 1980s, supporting the rapid expansion and modernisation of the UK telecommunications network.
