The Oxford Diecast Austin K2 Ambulance St John’s (item 76K2005) is a finely detailed 1:76 scale diecast model representing one of Britain’s most iconic wartime-designed ambulances in civilian medical service. Finished in authentic St John Ambulance livery, this model captures the classic “Katy” ambulance in its post-war humanitarian role.

Historical Background

The Austin K2/Y ambulance was produced between 1939 and 1945 at Austin’s Longbridge plant and became one of the most important British military ambulances of the Second World War. Over 13,000 units were built for Allied forces, including British, Commonwealth, and US military services.

Designed in cooperation with the Royal Army Medical Corps and bodybuilder Mann Egerton, the K2 was engineered to transport up to ten seated casualties or four stretcher cases. Its distinctive canvas bodywork and simple, robust mechanical design made it highly effective in harsh wartime conditions.

After the war, many K2 ambulances were repurposed for civilian use, including service with organisations such as the St John Ambulance, where they continued to provide patient transport and emergency medical support across the UK. This transition from military to civilian life made the K2 a long-lasting symbol of British emergency medical care in the mid-20th century.
