Historical Background

The Leyland Leopard fitted with the ECW B51 bodywork became one of the most successful and recognisable single-decker buses operating in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. Built on the dependable Leyland Leopard chassis and bodied by Eastern Coach Works, the combination was widely used by the National Bus Company, Scottish Bus Group, municipal operators, and independent fleets across the United Kingdom.

Introduced during the late 1950s, the Leyland Leopard quickly gained a reputation for reliability, versatility, and strong performance. Its rear-engined successor models would later dominate the market, but the front-engined Leopard remained extremely popular for both bus and coach applications thanks to its durable design and ease of maintenance.

The ECW B51 body was specifically developed for bus services, featuring clean functional styling, large windows, and comfortable passenger accommodation suitable for urban and rural routes alike. The combination became especially common in Eastern Counties, Bristol Omnibus, Southdown, and many National Bus Company fleets, where it served communities throughout Britain for decades.
