Historical Background
The Leyland Royal Tiger was one of the most important British coach chassis of the post-war era, produced by Leyland Motors between 1950 and 1954. Designed as a rear-engined evolution of Leyland’s earlier Tiger range, the Royal Tiger marked a significant step forward in coach engineering during a period when long-distance road travel was rapidly expanding across the United Kingdom and export markets.
Powered by a horizontally mounted Leyland diesel engine, the Royal Tiger was developed to offer improved weight distribution, smoother ride quality, and better passenger comfort compared with earlier front-engined designs. It was widely bodied by leading coachbuilders of the time, including Burlingham, Plaxton, and others, resulting in a variety of distinctive and elegant post-war coach styles.
The Leyland Royal Tiger became particularly associated with express coach services and private hire operators, as well as export markets where British-built commercial vehicles were highly regarded. Although production was relatively short, ending in the mid-1950s, the model played a key role in establishing Leyland’s reputation for robust and reliable long-distance transport vehicles.
