Historical Background

The Scammell Mechanical Horse was developed in the early 1930s by Scammell Lorries Ltd as a modern replacement for horse-drawn delivery transport, particularly for railway companies and urban goods distribution. Designed with a three-wheeled tractor unit and interchangeable trailers, it offered exceptional manoeuvrability, capable of turning in very tight spaces while efficiently hauling loads of up to three tons. The concept was widely adopted by railway operators, industrial firms and military users due to its versatility and low operating costs.

Hays Wharf Cartage Co. Ltd was a major London-based freight and warehousing company closely associated with dockside and railway goods handling in the capital. Vehicles such as the Scammell Mechanical Horse were ideally suited to its operations, moving goods between warehouses, railway depots and shipping terminals. The Mechanical Horse became a familiar sight in London’s commercial districts from the 1930s through to the post-war period, before eventually being replaced by more conventional lorries such as the Scammell Scarab. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of early motorised freight innovation in Britain.
