Details
Bring classic Great Western Railway heavy freight power to your OO gauge layout with the Oxford Rail GWR 2600 Class “Aberdare”, running number 2612, finished in GWR lined green with red frames. This finely detailed model represents one of the Great Western Railway’s dedicated early 20th-century mineral locomotives, designed specifically for demanding coal and heavy freight services.
The GWR 2600 “Aberdare” Class was introduced between 1900 and 1907 under William Dean to handle the ever-growing coal traffic from South Wales. A total of 80 locomotives were built, forming an important part of the GWR’s heavy freight fleet. These locomotives were widely used on long mineral trains, particularly operating from the South Wales coalfields to major industrial centres. Their strong 2-6-0 wheel arrangement provided the traction needed for heavy loads on steep gradients.
This model depicts locomotive 2612 in traditional GWR lined green livery with red-painted frames, representing its pre-grouping and early Great Western Railway mainline freight appearance. It is ideal for OO gauge Era 2–3 layouts and adds authentic early British steam freight operation to any collection.
This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, accurate boiler proportions, and separately applied components that reflect the robust design of the prototype. Its 2-6-0 wheel arrangement delivers strong traction, making it ideal for hauling long and heavy freight consists.
It pairs naturally with OO gauge period freight stock including open wagons, coal wagons, and brake vans, making it perfect for authentic GWR mineral traffic scenes.
Historical Background
The GWR 2600 Class “Aberdare” locomotives were designed to meet the Great Western Railway’s growing demand for heavy coal transport from the South Wales coalfields. Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, they formed a key part of William Dean’s standardisation efforts for freight locomotives.
Built between 1900 and 1907, the class worked extensively across the GWR network, hauling heavy mineral trains over challenging gradients. While many were withdrawn during the 1930s and 1940s, their long service life reflects their importance in supporting Britain’s industrial freight needs during the steam era.
