Details
The GWR 2600 Class, commonly known as the Aberdares, were a class of 2-6-0 heavy freight locomotives built for the Great Western Railway between 1900 and 1907. Designed under the direction of William Dean, the class comprised 80 robust engines intended primarily for hauling heavy coal traffic, particularly from the South Wales coalfield.
The Aberdares reflected the Great Western Railway’s strong standardisation policy of the era, sharing components and general design features with contemporary GWR locomotive classes. Their sure-footed performance and reliability made them well suited to demanding mineral duties across the network.
Withdrawals began in 1934, although several locomotives were placed in store and later returned to service during the early years of the Second World War to meet increased freight requirements. The final members of the class were withdrawn by 1949.
For model railway enthusiasts, the Aberdare 2-6-0 is an excellent choice for authentic Great Western heavy freight operations, especially on layouts depicting Welsh coal traffic in the early twentieth century.
