Details

The Caledonian Railway 264 and 611 Classes, popularly known as the “Pug,” were compact and powerful 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotives designed for intensive shunting and dock work. Built for the Caledonian Railway, the Class 264 appeared in 1883 to a design by Dugald Drummond and was constructed by Neilson and Company. The closely related Class 611 followed from 1895 under John F. McIntosh, with production at the St Rollox Works.

Designed for tight industrial environments, these diminutive locomotives were renowned for their robustness and agility. Some examples were later fitted with small, improvised coal tenders to extend operating range beyond the capacity of the saddle tank.

Following the 1923 Grouping, the class passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and later to British Railways in 1948. Withdrawals took place between 1959 and 1962, and unfortunately no members of the class were preserved.

For model railway enthusiasts, the Caledonian “Pug” remains an iconic subject, perfectly suited to shunting layouts, dockside scenes, and compact industrial settings.
