Details

Introduced in 1911 by the Great Eastern Railway, the Diagram 72 vans were built on a 10 ft 6 in wheelbase for use across a wide range of general freight duties. These versatile covered vans were originally rated at 10 tons, although their carrying capacity was officially reduced to 8 tons in June 1927.

Designed for durability and flexibility, the class proved notably long-lived. Following the 1923 Grouping they passed into the London and North Eastern Railway, and many examples later entered the fleet of British Railways in 1948.

A significant number of Diagram 72 vans remained in revenue-earning service into the late 1950s, a testament to their robust construction. In their later years under British Railways ownership, they were frequently employed in engineering and departmental trains, making them a useful and authentic addition to model railway layouts depicting mid-twentieth-century goods operations.
