Details

The Rh 1067 was an unusual class of electric locomotive used by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) between 1961 and 1994. Only five examples were ever built, numbered 1067 .01 to .05, making them true rarities in Austrian railway history. These locomotives were constructed by Jenbacher Werke with a central cab and an innovative electro-hydraulic drive, where an electric motor drove a hydraulic transmission — a design influenced by contemporary diesel technology that aimed to reduce stress on electrical equipment.

Deployed primarily for shunting duties, the Rh 1067 units were painted in fir green or later blood-orange liveries. Despite their cutting-edge concept, the electro-hydraulic drive proved susceptible to defects, and the class never went into full series production. The last active locomotive, 1067.03, was withdrawn on 1 October 1994, and by the mid-1990s the class was retired from revenue service.

Today, two units are preserved in Austrian railway museums at Knittelfeld and Ampflwang, offering a rare glimpse of this experimental design. For model railway enthusiasts, the Rh 1067 is a compelling prototype for Austrian layouts of the 1960s–1990s, and modern H0 scale models include detailed bodies, realistic pantographs, and digital sound options that capture its unique character.
