Details

The DB Class 139 is a distinctive variant of the DB Class E 40, part of Deutsche Bundesbahn’s highly successful Einheits-Elektrolokomotive family. The original E 40 was built between 1957 and 1973 as a robust Bo'Bo' electric locomotive designed primarily for medium freight duties. In 1968, the class was renumbered Class 140, with a total of 879 locomotives produced, making it one of the most numerous post-war German electric locomotives.

A subgroup of 31 locomotives was fitted with electric resistance brakes, a feature normally reserved for faster passenger locomotives. This modification was required for operation on steeply graded routes, most notably the Höllentalbahn and the Erkrath–Hochdahl incline. Initially designated E 40.11, these locomotives were reclassified as Class 139 under the new numbering system.

While mechanically similar to standard Class 140 locomotives, the Class 139 offered greatly improved downhill braking control, making it particularly suitable for heavy freight operations on mountainous lines. They remained in service well into the 1990s and were also used on cross-border freight services to Austria, including workings over the Brenner route.
