Details

The Siemens Vectron Dual Mode is a versatile member of the modern Vectron locomotive family, designed to operate seamlessly under electric overhead lines and on non-electrified track using a diesel engine. It combines the efficiency and low emissions of electric traction with the flexibility of diesel power, allowing uninterrupted journeys across sections of track where electrification is incomplete. This dual-mode capability eliminates the need to change locomotives when passing from electrified to non-electrified territory, saving time and simplifying operations.

Built on the proven Vectron platform, the Dual Mode locomotive retains a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and standard gauge design, with a traction power rating of around 2,000 kW available in both electric and diesel modes. A robust diesel engine and onboard fuel tank give it true operational independence when away from overhead wires, while electric mode offers zero tailpipe emissions and lower operating costs on electrified routes. The locomotive has a top speed of around 160 km/h, making it suitable for a range of passenger and freight duties.
