Details

The DSB Class MZ was a landmark diesel-electric locomotive series operated by Danske Statsbaner (DSB) and built by NOHAB in Sweden under licence from General Motors EMD between 1967 and 1978. A total of 61 locomotives were produced in four sub-series (MZ I through MZ IV), each tailored for evolving traffic demands on Denmark’s non-electrified network.

Featuring a rugged Co'Co' wheel arrangement and electric transmission, the early MZ I and II locomotives were powered by 16-cylinder EMD engines with a top speed of about 143 km/h (89 mph). Later MZ III and IV units received more powerful 20-cylinder engines and increased top speeds of around 165 km/h (103 mph), making them versatile for both freight and passenger services.

Throughout their career, Class MZ locomotives were used across Denmark on express passenger and heavy freight trains. As electrification expanded and newer traction arrived, the class was gradually withdrawn from main DSB service. Many were then transferred to freight operators or exported; a number still work for private railways in Sweden and Norway, and some were sold to operators in Australia where they continue to haul freight trains.
