Details

The DBAG Class 143 traces its roots to the DR Class 243, a universal four-axle electric locomotive developed in the early 1980s for the Deutsche Reichsbahn of East Germany. Faced with rapid railway electrification, the DR needed a modern, versatile Bo'Bo' locomotive for both passenger and freight services. The prototype, initially designated 212 001, was developed in 1982 and entered production as 243 001 with the maximum speed set at 120 km/h. Between 1984 and 1990, around 646 locomotives were built by LEW Hennigsdorf and delivered in dark red with a white stripe.

Following German reunification, many Class 243 locomotives were absorbed into the Deutsche Bahn AG fleet under the new designation Class 143. These reliable Bo'Bo' electrics soon worked beyond their former East German network, operating regional passenger services, S-Bahn duties, Schwarzwald and Höllentalbahn lines, and even occasional freight work across united Germany.

The Class 143’s solid performance, moderate top speed, and distinctive angular profile make it a classic prototype for regional and commuter modelling on German electrified layouts. It remains a favourite for Era IV scenes and is widely available in detailed H0 and N gauge models in both early DR and later DBAG liveries.
