Details

The EuroSprinter ES 64 U series forms part of the modular EuroSprinter family of electric locomotives developed by Siemens Mobility for the European market. The internal Siemens designation “ES 64” refers to the EuroSprinter platform with a 6,400 kW power rating, while the suffix “U” signifies a universal, multi-purpose electric capable of high-speed passenger and freight duties.

Originally designed to operate on 15 kV AC electrification, the ES 64 U locomotives feature a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and quill drives to reduce track forces, making them ideal for high-speed service. In Austria, ÖBB adopted the class as Class 1016, affectionately known as the “Taurus”, a brand name later extended to related ES 64 U variants including Class 1116 and Class 1216.

Variants capable of operating on multiple electrification systems, including 15 kV and 25 kV AC plus 1.5 kV and 3 kV DC, are designated ES 64 U4 and are used by operators such as ÖBB (Class 1216), Slovenske železnice (Class 541) and PKP Intercity (Class EU44).

The ES 64 U family can achieve a top speed of 230 km/h and is renowned for setting a world speed record of 357 km/h during testing.
