Details

The PKP Class SM42 is one of the most versatile and widely used diesel locomotives in Polish railway history, serving with Polskie Koleje Panstwowe (PKP) and later private operators for decades. Introduced in the 1960s, the SM42 was designed as a medium-power diesel-electric locomotive capable of handling a broad range of duties on both non-electrified main lines and branch lines.

Featuring a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and a reliable diesel engine paired with electrical transmission, the SM42 delivers strong tractive effort and smooth control at low speeds, making it ideal for shunting, local passenger services, freight duties, and transfer runs.
