Details
Enhance your pre-grouping freight roster with the new OO Gauge SER/SECR 5-Plank 10 Ton Open Wagon range, designed to authentically represent the varied wagon stock of the South Eastern Railway and South Eastern & Chatham Railway eras.
This new range features multiple body tooling variants, accurately covering both the D1340 round-ended design and the D1341 low D-ended version, alongside square-ended variants of each diagram. Each model captures the distinctive character of late 19th and early 20th century freight stock, making them ideal for realistic SER and SECR goods trains.
Every wagon is highly detailed throughout, with full external, internal, and underframe detailing to meet modern OO gauge standards. They are fitted with split-spoked wheels, Stone’s Patent Either-Side brakes, SER Type “D” axleboxes, and ribbed buffers for maximum fidelity. Additional refinement comes from brass bearings and NEM coupling pockets for reliable operation and easy integration into contemporary layouts, all finished with high-quality livery application.
The D1341 Low D versions also include optional Williams Pattern sheet rail fittings, supplied in both raised and ‘at rest’ positions, allowing modellers to choose the correct operational appearance. Perfect for enthusiasts seeking historically accurate and operationally versatile freight stock.
Historical Background
In the final years of the 19th century, the South Eastern Railway faced a sharp rise in freight traffic, prompting the hiring of additional wagons and the ordering of around 2,000 more from private builders and Ashford Works. This expansion overlapped with the 1899 formation of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, under which demand for rolling stock remained high. Around 1,250 5-plank open wagons were built between 1897 and 1901 to Diagrams 1340 and 1341, by Ashbury, BRCW, Oldbury and Ashford, with subcontracting making exact totals uncertain. Measuring 15ft 5in with a 9ft 4in wheelbase, they differed mainly in end design. Both were used interchangeably for coal and general goods. Some square-ended conversions followed in 1912. The Southern Railway inherited them in 1923, with final withdrawals in 1942 and 1948.
