Details

Recreate the golden age of South Eastern railway operations with the highly detailed Rapido Trains UK OO Gauge SER O Class 0-6-0. Accurately modelled in OO Scale (1:76), this impressive locomotive captures the character and versatility of one of the South Eastern Railway's most important Victorian freight engines.

Available in a range of authentic liveries, including several depicting the locomotive in its early South Eastern Railway condition, the Rapido Trains O Class is perfect for pre-grouping, SECR, and early Southern Railway model railway layouts. Whether hauling heavy goods trains, mixed traffic services, or branch line workings, this locomotive delivers exceptional realism and operational performance.

At the heart of the model is a smooth-running, high-performance mechanism featuring Rapido's MoPower stay-alive capacitor system for uninterrupted operation over complex trackwork and pointwork. Electrical reliability is further enhanced through plunger pickups on the locomotive and wheel-bearing pickups on the tender, ensuring dependable running at all speeds.

The range incorporates multiple tooling variations to accurately represent different members of the class throughout their working lives. These include alternative tender fronts, 'garden shed' and 'coalboard' toolbox configurations, plus both smooth and riveted smokebox designs.

Packed with premium features, every model is equipped with a factory-installed speaker, 21-pin DCC decoder socket, NEM 362 coupling pockets, and sprung buffers. DCC-fitted versions also feature realistic firebox flicker and dynamic fire draw effects, bringing the locomotive to life when in operation.

For added authenticity, SER and SECR versions include painted etched-style number plates within the detailing pack, alongside a selection of optional parts that allow modellers to customise their locomotive to match specific prototypes.

Combining historical accuracy, outstanding detail, and modern performance, the Rapido Trains UK OO Gauge SER O Class 0-6-0 is an essential addition to any British model railway collection.

Historical Background

The South Eastern Railway (SER) O Class 0-6-0 was one of the most important Victorian freight locomotives to operate across south-east England. Designed by James Stirling shortly after his appointment as Chief Locomotive Superintendent in 1878, the O Class was created to meet the growing demand for more powerful goods and passenger engines on the SER network.

Built between 1878 and 1899, a total of 122 locomotives were produced by both Sharp, Stewart & Co. and the SER’s Ashford Works. Featuring a distinctive domeless boiler, Ramsbottom safety valves and Stirling’s characteristic round-topped cab, the O Class quickly became a familiar sight on railways throughout Kent, Sussex and beyond.

Although early examples suffered from steaming and structural issues, subsequent modifications improved performance and reliability. The class became renowned as a versatile locomotive, hauling heavy freight trains, mixed traffic workings and occasional passenger services. Following the introduction of vacuum-braked trains, many O Class locomotives were upgraded to work a wider range of duties, regularly appearing on routes stretching as far west as Reading.

By the early twentieth century, newer and more powerful locomotives began to replace the O Class on primary duties. In 1904, Harry Wainwright introduced a major rebuilding programme that fitted many locomotives with improved domed boilers and redesigned cabs. These rebuilt engines became known as the SECR O1 Class, with 59 examples converted by 1932.

Following the 1923 Grouping, 31 O Class locomotives entered service with the Southern Railway, while several others found new homes on the East Kent Railway. However, advancing locomotive design gradually rendered the class obsolete, and the final unrebuilt O Class was withdrawn in 1932.
