Details

Bring authentic railway operation to your layout with the Rapido Trains UK OO Gauge Evolution Horsebox. Based on a classic 16ft four-wheel horsebox from the pre-grouping era, this highly detailed model captures the character and craftsmanship of the specialised vehicles that transported valuable horses across Britain's railway network.

Designed to complement the acclaimed Evolution coach range, this OO gauge horsebox is packed with period-correct details that make it ideal for layouts spanning the pre-grouping era, the Big Four companies, and even the final years of steam. Featuring a single Groom’s compartment, the model includes a fully detailed interior with luggage rack, seating, and internal doors, accurately reflecting the facilities provided for attendants caring for horses during transit.

The Evolution Horsebox boasts an impressive array of separately fitted components, including era-specific gas and oil lighting details. Selected models feature roof-mounted gas lamps, external pipework, and underframe gas tanks, delivering exceptional realism from every angle.

For added flexibility, the supplied detailing pack includes alternative glazing inserts, allowing modellers to display droplight windows fully closed, partially open, or fully open. The model is also equipped with NEM 362 coupling pockets, metal bearings for smooth and reliable running, and two lengths of optional close-coupling bars modelled on prototype vacuum pipes.

Whether operating as part of a passenger train, positioned at the head of a goods service, or standing in a station siding, the Rapido Trains UK Evolution Horsebox is a superb addition to any OO gauge model railway. Combining outstanding detail, operational authenticity, and historical accuracy, it perfectly recreates a distinctive piece of British railway rolling stock.

Historical Background

Since the earliest days of the railway, specialised vehicles have been used to transport live animals safely across the country. While cattle wagons and open trucks were ideal for moving livestock over long distances, they were less suitable for valuable or sensitive animals. This led to the development of dedicated vehicles such as pigeon vans, prized cattle wagons, elephant carriers, and most notably, the railway horse box.

The horse box became one of the most common specialised railway vehicles of the Victorian and steam eras. With the growth of the railway network, horses could be transported quickly and comfortably to race meetings, agricultural shows, auctions, military manoeuvres, and leisure events. This transformed travel for owners who relied on their horses for sport, work, or prestige.

Horse boxes varied in design between railway companies and carriage builders. Early examples ranged from compact four-wheeled vehicles to larger six-wheeled designs capable of carrying multiple horses. By the turn of the twentieth century, the most common horse boxes were around 16 feet long and featured a divided interior, allowing more than one horse to travel safely. Most also included a groom’s compartment so attendants could care for the animals during transit.

Although similar in appearance to some goods vans, horse boxes were built to passenger coaching stock standards. Equipped with continuous brakes and improved suspension, they could operate at passenger train speeds. To minimise stress, horses typically remained in the same vehicle for the entire journey, meaning horse boxes were often seen far from their home railway.

Horse boxes remained a familiar sight across Britain until the end of the steam era. Their widespread use and ability to travel anywhere on the network make them a fascinating and authentic addition to model railway layouts depicting almost any region or period of British railway history.
