Details

Add a unique and historically significant vehicle to your OO Scale (1:76) model railway with the Rapido Trains UK Evolution Open Carriage Truck. Expertly modelled on a 16ft four-wheel prototype from the pre-grouping era, this beautifully detailed wagon captures the appearance and functionality of the specialised vehicles once used to transport horse-drawn carriages across Britain's railway network.

Designed to complement the popular Evolution coach range, the OO Gauge Evolution Open Carriage Truck features an impressive level of detail, making it ideal for layouts depicting the pre-grouping, grouping, and early British Railways periods. Authentic features include finely reproduced metal wheel guide strips on the deck and removable securing crossbars that can be positioned fore and aft, just like the prototype, allowing modellers to recreate realistic carriage-loading operations.

Each model is produced with one of three distinctive side panel variations – Open Frame, Panelled, or Plain – accurately reflecting the variety seen on the real vehicles. To enhance realism straight from the box, every Open Carriage Truck includes a removable carriage load. Three different carriage body styles are represented across the range: Covered Cupboard Door, Covered Drop-Flap, and Open Drop-Flap designs. The removable load allows modellers to customise the vehicle with alternative loads to suit their chosen era or operating scenario.

Built to Rapido Trains UK's renowned standards, every model is fitted with NEM 362 coupling pockets, smooth-running metal bearings, and includes two lengths of optional close-coupling bars modelled on prototype vacuum pipes.

Historical Background

During the nineteenth century, Britain's expanding railway network transformed long-distance travel. While railways offered a faster and more comfortable alternative to road transport, many passengers still relied on horse-drawn vehicles to complete the journey between the station and their final destination. This demand led to the development of the Open Carriage Truck (OCT), a specialised railway vehicle designed to transport road carriages alongside their owners.

Early carriage trucks were little more than adapted flat wagons, but by the late Victorian and Edwardian eras they had evolved into purpose-built vehicles. Open carriage trucks featured steel-plated loading decks with extended ramps, allowing carriages to be rolled aboard and secured using adjustable crossbars. Designs ranged from compact trucks carrying a single carriage to larger bogie and covered variants capable of transporting heavier loads.

Although similar in appearance to flat wagons, OCTs were built to passenger coaching stock standards. Equipped with continuous brakes and improved suspension, they could operate safely at passenger train speeds and were often attached to express and excursion services.

Open carriage trucks carried a remarkable variety of loads. Alongside private carriages, they were used by removal firms, businesses, travelling circuses, and even military organisations transporting artillery pieces and fire engines. They were frequently paired with horse boxes, enabling owners to continue their journey upon arrival, although they could also run in dedicated carriage truck formations or as individual vehicles.

Like horse boxes, carriage trucks often travelled far from their home railway, making them a familiar sight across Britain. To reduce shocks to valuable loads, they were commonly marshalled at the front of goods trains, while in passenger services they could appear almost anywhere in the formation.

With the rise of motor vehicles and improvements to Britain's road network, the need for traditional carriage transport declined. Many OCTs were replaced by covered carriage trucks, well wagons, and bogie flats, though some survived long enough to carry early motor cars. For model railway enthusiasts, open carriage trucks offer a fascinating and highly distinctive addition to layouts from the pre-grouping era through to the final years of steam.
