Details
Add a distinctive and historically accurate guard’s vehicle to your layout with this South Eastern Railway 20-ton six-wheeled Goods Brake Van, later classified as Diagram 1558 by the Southern Railway. First introduced in 1898, this design reflected contemporary Midland Railway practice and initially featured a single enclosed veranda, with 40 examples constructed.
Following the formation of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway in 1899, the design was revisited in 1910, when a further 50 brake vans were built with enclosed verandas at both ends. Between 1914 and 1920, earlier single-veranda versions were also rebuilt to this dual-ended configuration, creating a consistent fleet despite subtle detail differences.
All 90 vehicles passed into Southern Railway ownership in 1923, with an impressive 86 later inherited by British Railways. Withdrawals occurred between 1949 and 1960, with some examples entering departmental service, making this an essential model for layouts spanning pre-grouping through early BR eras.
