Details
During WWI, the Ministry of Munitions relied heavily on railways to transport hazardous materials like ammonium nitrate, used in shell production. In 1916, 100 specialised 10-ton powder tank wagons were built by The Leeds Forge Company for this purpose. Airtight and conically shaped, these wagons prevented moisture ingress and allowed easy unloading via a hinged end door. Though resembling liquid tankers, they carried dry explosive powder and featured pressed steel underframes. A vital part of Britain’s wartime logistics, these unique wagons offer a fascinating prototype for model railway enthusiasts interested in military transport and early 20th-century industrial railway history.
