History:

The Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation – often known simply as “Super Connie” – was a post-war development of the classic Constellation line. It first flew in July 1951 and entered service in 1955.

With its graceful dolphin-shaped fuselage and distinctive triple-tail, the L-1049G combined elegance with performance. It was powered by four Wright R-3350 turbo-compound radial engines, producing around 3,250 hp each, and could carry between 62 and 95 passengers (or up to 109 in high-density configuration).

Capable of cruising at approximately 340 mph (547 km/h) and with a typical maximum take-off weight of 137,500 lb, the Super Constellation became one of the world’s great piston-engine airliners.

Used by major airlines and militaries, the L-1049G served through the 1950s and early 1960s — a last great “propliner” before the jet age fully took over.
