History:

The Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a/U4 was an experimental variant of the German Me 262 jet fighter, developed late in the Second World War as a heavy bomber-interceptor. It was fitted with a single, nose-mounted 50 mm BK 5 cannon, the same weapon used in some Me 410s, intended to destroy Allied bombers from long range. Only one prototype was completed and test-flown. The recoil of the BK 5 proved problematic, and the variant never entered operational service. The Me 262 programme as a whole was hindered by Allied bombing, material shortages and engine reliability issues.
