History:

The Lockheed SR-71B Blackbird was the two-seat trainer variant of the SR-71 strategic reconnaissance aircraft, developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works. Introduced in 1965, it featured a raised second cockpit for an instructor, allowing pilots to train for the SR-71’s demanding high-speed, high-altitude operations. Like the standard SR-71A, it was powered by Pratt & Whitney J58 engines and capable of speeds over Mach 3. Only two SR-71B airframes were built. They were used extensively by the U.S. Air Force to prepare crews for operational missions until the SR-71’s retirement, supporting the Blackbird programme throughout its service life.
