Historical Background

Designed by the renowned engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, SS Great Eastern was launched in 1858 and was the largest ship ever built at the time, measuring over 211 metres in length, a record she held for nearly 40 years. Originally intended to carry around 4,000 passengers on long-distance voyages without refuelling, the ship was far ahead of her time in both size and engineering.

Although she never achieved lasting commercial success as a passenger liner, Great Eastern found a new role as a cable-laying vessel. She played a pivotal role in laying the first successful permanent transatlantic telegraph cable, helping to revolutionise global communications and cementing her place as one of the most significant ships in maritime history.
