History:
F/A-18E/F Super Hornet:
The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a twin-engine, carrier-capable, supersonic multirole fighter/strike aircraft developed from the earlier F/A-18.
It first flew in November 1995 and entered service with the United States Navy in 2001. The Super Hornet is larger than its predecessors, with a maximum takeoff weight of about 66,000 lb (˜ 29,937 kg) and powered by two General Electric F414-GE-400 turbofan engines.
Capable of speeds above Mach 1.8, it serves both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles. It carries a 20 mm M61A2 cannon internally and can be armed with a wide range of missiles and bombs on multiple external hardpoints. The Super Hornet remains one of the backbone strike and fighter jets of modern carrier aviation.
F6F-5 Hellcat:
The Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat was a U.S. Navy carrier-based fighter of World War II. It succeeded the F6F-3 and became the most produced Spit-Hellcat variant: about 7,870 of the roughly 12,275 Hellcats built were F6F-5s.
Powered by a single Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10W radial piston engine, the F6F-5 could reach around 612Â km/h and service ceiling above 11,000Â m. Its armament comprised six 0.50-inch (12.7Â mm) Browning machine guns mounted in the wings. It could also carry bombs, rockets, or additional weaponry under its wings and fuselage for ground-attack or strike missions.
The Hellcat, including the F6F-5, proved rugged, powerful and reliable. Hellcats shot down over 5,200 enemy aircraft, making it the most successful Allied naval fighter in terms of enemy kills. It remained in service post-war: radar-equipped night-fighter versions flew as late as 1954.
