History:

The Boeing E-3A Sentry is an American airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft commonly known as “AWACS” built by Boeing.

Derived from the civilian Boeing 707 airframe, the E-3 features a distinctive 30-foot-diameter rotating radar dome (“rotodome”) mounted above the fuselage, giving it 360° airborne surveillance capability. It is powered by four Pratt & Whitney TF33-PW-100A turbofan engines and carries a crew of four pilots plus 13-19 mission specialists.

The Sentry provides all-weather, long-range surveillance, command, control, and communications — detecting and tracking aircraft and maritime targets over a radius of several hundred miles, guiding and coordinating friendly forces in air or sea operations. Built between 1977 and 1992 (68 total), the E-3 remains in service with several forces — including NATO — and underwent continuous upgrades (radar, avionics, mission systems) to extend its operational life into the 2030s.
