Details

The FS Class E.424 was a class of electric locomotives built for Ferrovie dello Stato (the Italian State Railways) between 1943 and 1951 to serve light passenger and mixed traffic duties. A total of 158 units were constructed by several Italian builders including Breda, Reggiane, Ansaldo, OM/CGE and TIBB. The design used a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement under 3 kV DC overhead electrification and produced about 1,500 kW of power with a top speed of 120 km/h, making it versatile for many secondary and regional services.

The class originated from an earlier 1930s project by engineer Giuseppe Bianchi and was revived after World War II using components and experience from larger FS electrics such as the E.636. Prototypes were completed during the war, but most production took place afterwards with support from post-war reconstruction funds.

From 1986 to 1993, 105 units were modernised with push-pull equipment and other updates for commuter service, designated E.424N, with higher maximum speed and remote control capability for use with multiple-unit commuter consists. The last E.424s were withdrawn from service by 2008, ending a long career that spanned over six decades.
