Details

Pendolino is an Italian family of high-speed trains known for its tilting technology, which allows the train to lean into curves and travel at higher speeds on conventional track while keeping passengers comfortable. The name Pendolino comes from the Italian word for “little pendulum,” referring to how the cars tilt as the train goes around bends. The tilting system can increase cornering speed by up to about 30–35 percent compared with non-tilting trains by compensating for centrifugal forces on passengers. Pendolino technology was developed by Fiat Ferroviaria and later produced by Alstom after it acquired Fiat Ferroviaria in 2000. Pendolinos began commercial service in Italy in 1988 and are now used in many European countries including Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland and the Czech Republic, making them one of the most widespread high-speed tilting designs in the world. Variants of the family include early Italian models such as the ETR 450 and ETR 460, international versions like the ETR 610 used for cross-border services, and more recent generations like the New Pendolino built for multiple electrification systems and modern signalling. Overall sales worldwide number in the hundreds, with Pendolinos operating at speeds up to about 250 km/h, combining high speed, passenger comfort and versatile service across electrified networks
