Historical Background

The Nordpfeil ("Northern Arrow"), known in Denmark as Nordpilen, was one of the most important rail links between Germany and Denmark. For decades it operated as a prestigious express service connecting Hamburg with northern Jutland via the famous Rendsburg High Bridge across the Kiel Canal.

Following the introduction of Deutsche Bahn's InterRegio network, the Nordpfeil was reborn as IR 2184, operating from Hannover through Hamburg and Flensburg before continuing into Denmark via Fredericia and Aarhus to Frederikshavn. These international services utilised specially equipped multi-voltage coaches capable of operating across different railway systems.

The train became a hallmark of 1990s European rail travel, typically hauled by DB Class 218 diesel locomotives in Germany and Danish State Railways Class MZ locomotives north of Flensburg.
