Historical Background

The Nordpfeil ("Northern Arrow"), known in Denmark as the Nordpilen, was one of Northern Europe's premier international train services. For many years it connected Hamburg with northern Jutland, crossing the famous Rendsburg High Bridge over the Kiel Canal before continuing into Denmark.

Following the introduction of Deutsche Bahn's InterRegio network, the Nordpfeil was relaunched as IR 2184, operating from Hannover via Hamburg and Flensburg before continuing through Fredericia and Aarhus to Frederikshavn. The service utilised specially equipped multi-voltage coaches to facilitate seamless international operation between Germany and Denmark.

North of Flensburg, the train was typically hauled by Danish State Railways Class MZ diesel locomotives, while Deutsche Bahn Class 218 locomotives handled the German section of the route.
