Like the renowned "Taurus" locomotives, the 2016 series was also given a legendary name: "Hercules," inspired by the Greek hero famed for his immense strength. Between 2002 and 2004, a total of 100 of these diesel-electric universal locomotives entered service with the ÖBB. Designed for versatility, the Hercules is capable of multiple traction and push-pull operations. Delivering 2,000 kW of engine power and reaching a top speed of 140 km/h, it offers both strength and efficiency. With an axle load of 20 tons, it is also suitable for branch line use, making it a powerful and adaptable locomotive for a wide range of duties.
