Beginning in the mid-1950s, the German Federal Railway (DB) introduced the V 60 and V 60.1 series locomotives, acquiring a total of 942 units to handle light and medium shunting duties. These versatile diesel locomotives quickly became a staple of yard and branch line operations across Germany.

The primary distinction between the V 60 (BR 260) and V 60.1 (BR 261) series lies in the higher friction load of the BR 261, enhancing traction for heavier shunting tasks. Both series are capable of reaching a top speed of 30 km/h in shunting mode and 60 km/h when travelling on the mainline, delivering a robust power output of 478 kW.
